PREACHING:Preach Jacobs, a local rapper whose swagger is found in his lyrics rather than a chain dangling from his neck, will release “Maple St. Sessions, ” an eight-song EP, on Wednesday at The Whig.
Denz, a London-based producer, produced five tracks. This continues Preach’s work with foreign beatmakers, including Nicolay of Foreign Exchange and Marc Mac, half of the UK electronic duo 4hero. Preach and Marc Mac will release an EP, “Passport, ” as soon as Preach can get to London to finish production.
“The goal is to go over there and finish recording it,” Preach said. “I want to be in the studio. Hopefully in the next few months, we can put it on the lock.”
Earlier this year Preach toured Japan.
“You see how other countries respond to hip-hop music, and you have a greater appreciation when you get back,” he said.
A hip-hop show at The Whig, known primarily as a bar for hipsters and open-minded people, might seem out of place, but it doesn’t to Preach.
“They may not be hip-hop fans, but if it’s a presented in a creative way, they’re going to be open to it,” he said. “It has its own personality that I don’t think any other Columbia venue has.”
Wednesday is also pint night. “If they come for the cheap beer instead of me, I won’t be offended,” Preach said.
The night will also be a release party for Piensa Art Company’s comic book “The Heroes of Santa Moreno. ”
The show starts at 9 p.m. The Whig is at 1200 Main St. Free; (803) 931-8852.
